The Batman actor was pictured being taken to a rehabilitation centre in Malibu by his concerned ex-wife Jennifer Garner last Wednesday after he apparently hit rock bottom.
Now People Magazine reports a source close to Ben, 46, believes he was on a downward spiral in the days before the journey.
They said: "Ben had been drinking alone for days.
"He was in bad shape. He had barely been eating and had not showered.
"It didn’t take much convincing. He wanted to go, and he cooperated.”
A second source added to the publication: “He knew he needed help and was vocal about it.”
Ben's return to rehab follows two previous stints, one in 2001 and last year in 2017, with another source saying he has been "constantly working on himself" throughout.
However his split from girlfriend Lindsay Shookus in July reportedly sent him "into a darker and darker place until he had to reach out for help."
Ben, who has three children with Jennifer, has been open about his battles in the past, writing on Facebook in 2017: "I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.”
It was previously reported Ben had told Jennifer, 46, he was desperate to be a "better man" as she drove him to rehab.
A source told the Sunday Mirror: "Ben insisted he wanted to change his ways for the sake of their children."
The former couple are parents to Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and Samuel, 6.
The actors married in 2005 but split last year, however they have remained amicable and have regularly been seen spending time together as a family before Ben's latest trip to rehab.
