'Below Deck Med': What Does The Crew Really Think About Each Other?

A few Below Deck Mediterranean crew members have worked together for the past few seasons and have really gotten to know each other. Crew members like Captain Sandy Yawn and chief stew Hannah Ferrier had a contentious working relationship last year.

Ferrier and bosun João Franco not only didn’t get along professionally, they simply didn’t like each other last season. While deckhand Colin Macy-O’Toole’s happy go lucky attitude won everyone over, he may have been in for a surprise this season with Yawn.

So how have the crew’s relationships evolved from one season to the other? Ferrier, Macy’O’Toole, and Franco dished with about where they all stand today.

Yawn wanted to fire Ferrier last season

Their last season together wasn’t their best. When Ferrier’s focus was more on bosun Conrad Empson and not on her job, Yawn called her out on it. At one point, when Ferrier was off the yacht with guests for hours, Yawn had enough and wanted to fire Ferrier. She told Ferrier they weren’t going to be able to work together again when Ferrier insisted she wasn’t in the wrong.

Thankfully the captain and chief stew found common ground and not only worked out their differences, they now have an exceptional working relationship. This season, Ferrier knew to inform Yawn immediately when the first chef’s food was subpar. Plus, Ferrier kept romance off the yacht this season too.

Ferrier told Bravo she is happy the two yachties are on good terms. “So this season working with Captain Sandy, we got along so much better, Ferrier said. “And it was nice to just be able to have a good vibe with the captain for once.”

Franco says he worked very hard this season

Even though Ferrier and Franco didn’t get along last season, he’s always had a strong working relationship with Yawn. He was just a deckhand last season, but because he showed so much initiative, Yawn took him under her wing.

Since last season, Franco too became a captain. He also returned this season as the bosun on the yacht. He told Bravo he thinks Yawn appreciated his hard work this season too.

“I think Captain Sandy’s overall opinion of me this season will be good,” Franco says. “I think she’ll be impressed with my hard work and the team player that I am.”

The nice captain gets tougher

Macy-O’Toole said Yawn was a lot tougher this season. While she still brings her warmth and compassion to the job, Macy-O’Toole says she wasn’t putting up with nonsense this season. “Captain Sandy this season, she absolutely kills it,” he remarks.

“You get a little bit more of her hard-ass side, I know she’s known to be the nice captain,” he continues. “But, this season, she turns a new leaf.” Indeed, Yawn let the crew know she wasn’t going to be as lenient this season. And the crew had previous crews to thank for that too.

Even though she was tougher on the crew, she still had this message: “Teamwork makes the dream work!”
