BBC Two's award-winning Mum will end after third and final series

Sad news, everyone – BBC Two’s award-winning series Mum is coming to an end.

The quietly popular comedy-drama, which follows a widow Cathy (Lesley Manville) and her family in the aftermath of her husband’s death, has drawn acclaim since it first aired in 2016.

However, the show is now officially ending after the upcoming third series, so prepare the tissues.

Star Lisa McGrillis, who plays Cathy’s son Jason’s girlfriend Kelly, revealed the news on social media that the third series had finished shooting.

“With a lump in my throat and a heavy heart, [it’s] impossible to believe that today is the last day EVER filming #Mum what a joy it has been and boy oh boy are you in for a treat,” she tweeted.

A spokesperson for producer Big Talk has since confirmed to Chortle that “the new series will be the finale and transmission will be next year”.

Mum aired its second series earlier this year, leaving fans delighted with the finale when Cathy finally confessed her true feelings for Michael (Peter Mullan) after tension between the pair over the two series.

The series has been written by Stefan Golaszewski, well known for the hit sitcom Him & Her. He has picked up a BAFTA for his writing on Mum, and Manville has also been nominated for her performance as Cathy.

Mum airs on BBC Two.
