Rishi Sunak is the favourite to replace Liz Truss as Prime Minister as Boris Johnson has pulled out of the leadership race. Grant Shapps clashed with BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay on Monday’s instalment of the flagship news programme as the presenter told viewers “we don’t really know what [Sunak’s] policies are”.

“I think he’s got all the really good ideas on his side and I think he will be a terrific Prime Minister,” Shapps stressed.

Kay replied: “Yes he did go through that prolonged leadership campaign during the summer but over the last week I think we’ve had one tweet, that’s all we’ve had.

“We don’t really know what his policies are, he hasn’t done any hustings, he’s done no interviews and yet by the end of the day, he could end up as Prime Minister. Is this really the right way to choose a leader for a country and a party?”

Shapps snapped back: “You’ve clearly been following his Twitter account more closely than I have. I think given he spends weeks in the summer going around every single day getting into immense detail and getting into five different leadership debates, I think people will know by now what he stands for.”

Shapps continued to defend Sunak, telling Kay what he stands for today “turns out to be doubly true”.

“He’s not in the mind space of thinking that’s it, it’s all over,” Shapps exclaimed. “I think what people have found is you cannot borrow money we don’t have.

“I think all of his arguments have been proven to be true and I think he will run a very tight ship and a very good administration and actually a bit calmer [government], which is what the people of the country are asking for.”
