A Batgirl TV series is rumored to be arriving soon on the DC Universe streaming service. A new report from FandomWire suggests that Warner Bros. has ordered a TV series focusing on the character that is set to premiere in 2020.

According to the site, the planned live-action series will be having 13 episodes with production reportedly slated to begin in February 2019. The Batgirl TV series is planned to be released alongside the adult animated Harley Quinn series.

The rumored series has yet to announce its cast and showrunner, though Greg Berlanti will most likely have some type of role in the show’s development as he’s currently involved with other DC Universe original shows including “Titans, “Doom Patrol” and “Stargirl“. The site also notes that “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” showrunner Melissa Rosenberg may be attached on the series.

Warner Bros. has voiced its interest to bring the Batman’s female protege alive. Joss Whedon previously pitched a Batgirl movie, though he struggled to write a script and the studio feared that having a male director producing a female character-led movie would cause a controversy. The latest report on the planned movie was that it’s being pushed back and was no longer a priority.

Batgirl is most notably known as one of Batman’s rare female proteges. Barbara Gordon, Commissioner James Gordon’s daughter, is the most popular, and enduring, character to don the mantle. Others who have gone by the name Batgirl are Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, though they go by different code names in the current run of DC Comics.

In the comics, Barbara and fellow Batman’s protege Robin a.k.a. Dick Grayson are often depicted very close to each other. Some fans even think that their relationship is a romantic one.

While it’s still unknown whether or not a Batgirl TV series will arrive on the streaming service, fans will soon meet Dick Grayson on upcoming “Titans“. Starring Brenton Thwaites as Dick, the series is set to debut on October 12 on the DC Universe streaming service.
