Barbara Windsor’s husband reveals she no longer remembers her home amid Alzheimer’s battle

The 81-year-old was diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease in 2014.

The EastEnders icon and acting legend’s husband opened up in a BBC2 radio interview, admitting that the state of her condition was complicated.

He said: “There’s good and bad days, the confusion does progress and that becomes a lot more stressful for her to live with and you as the carer to watch.”

Scott Mitchell, who has been married to Barbara for almost 20 years, continued: “I think what I’ve learnt by talking to other people is it’s very different for every case.”

The star’s husband further explained how her condition had worsened, saying: “It’s very simple things that used to be very easy, whether that’s signing something or writing a letter, opening something …”

In a heartbreaking admission, Scott then revealed that Barbara often struggled to remember her own home.

“At times very frustrating and irritable. It gets worse at night, with Barbara it’s to do with our house,” he confessed.

Before adding: “She constantly asks me over and over again at night whose house is this, are we staying here, is this house I grew up with my mummy?”

The emotional comments came after Scott discussed plans for his London Marathon run for the Dementia Revolution Campaign.

Along with an array of Barbara’s former EastEnders cast members known as “Barbara’s Revolutionaries”, Scott is set to run the London Marathon next month.

The campaign hopes to raise £100,000 for vital research for the disease.
