Avengers Endgame box office is THIS close to breaking Avatar’s biggest movie EVER record

After a colossal opening, Avengers Endgame’s box office dominance has been waning in recent weeks. Having opened at the end of April, the Marvel epic has had to fight competition in movies like Detective Pikachu and John Wick 3. Nevertheless, the blockbuster is edging ever closer to Avatar’s record as the biggest movie of all time. And boy is Avengers Endgame almost there.

Following this weekend’s box office takings, Avengers Endgame has now made $2,730,565,940 worldwide, compared to Avatar’s $2,787,965,087.

This means the Marvel epic is only $58 million away from topping James Cameron’s 3D extravaganza.

Of course, Avengers Endgame has already topped Titanic, but taking into account inflation, Cameron’s other biggest movie technically made a lot more money.

Inflation aside, Forbes reckon Endgame’s chances of actually topping Avatar and becoming the No 1 movie of all time is a “coin-toss”.

Adjusted for inflation, Avengers Endgame’s $2.7 billion is still a long way away from matching 1997’s Titanic and 2009’s Avatar.

Titanic really made around $3.099 billion, while Avatar’s equivalent is $3.273 billion.

Even so the latter isn’t the biggest film of all time with inflation taken into account.

That would be 1939’s Gone with the Wind on $3.728 billion, a feat that will probably never be topped considering today’s battle with online piracy.

Meanwhile, four Avatar sequels are currently in the works, with release dates having been delayed yet again.

Avatar 2 was set to release in December 2020, but will now arrive in time for Christmas 2021.

The other three sequels will follow every two years, with Avatar 5 completing the five-film series in 2027.

This clever marketing move means there will be a Star Wars and Avatar movie on rotation each Christmas from 2021-2027.
