As Maureen Lipman returns to Coronation Street in a new role, here's other actors who made comebacks on the cobbles

The 72-year-old is a revelation as sharp-tongued Evelyn Plummer, Tyrone’s gran.

Yet sharp-eyed Street fans may have done a double take – Maureen played landlady Lillian Spencer in 1992.

Here, Amy Reading reveals the other actors who have made comebacks on the cobbles.

Jo-anne Knowles

She has played a whopping FIVE roles on Corrie.

Her two most notable appearances were as DC Ann Short, investigating the disappearance of Linda Baldwin and as Peter Barlow’s sexy stalker Chloe Tipton.

Robin Askwith

Star of the ’70s Confessions sex films played ageing rocker Ritchie de Vries, a showbiz pal of Dennis Tanner.

Earlier he was holiday rep Aidan, who tried it on with Eileen when she and Steve went to Malta.

James Gaddas

The Bad Girls star made his Corrie debut as Robert Prescott – a yuppie businessman who made an enemy of Mike Baldwin.

Nine years on and James was back in Weatherfield, pulling pints as Rovers barman Vinny Sorrell.

Brian Capron

His original role was kind social worker Don Worthington but far more memorable is Brian’s second stint as serial killer Richard Hillman, who terrorised the Street.

Peter Kay

The comedian first appeared as a shopfitter refurbishing the Corner Shop (it later became Dev’s), and again as drayman Eric Gartside who took Shelley Unwin on a disastrous date.

Ted Robbins

The comedian was a hoot as supernatural boffin Brendan Finch, right, who romanced Mary Taylor.

Ted previously played Officer McAlister, a guard at the prison where John Stape was banged up.

Sue Johnston

She was sassy matriarch Gloria Price who sped off into the sunset with Rita’s hubby.

But in 1982 Sue was bookie’s wife Mrs Chadwick. She said of her first stint: “I remember it so clearly because I was terrified.”

Tristan Gemmill

Over a decade before rustling up delicacies as bistro boss Robert Preston, Tristan was Will Griffiths, a drugs counsellor who helped Leanne Battersby fight her addiction.

Zoe Henry

She was eco-warrior Log Thwaite, girlfriend of vegan Spider Nugent – until he caught her eating a bacon buttie.

Nine years on, Zoe was back as Ashley’s stalker and ex-fling Casey Carswell.

Suranne Jones

She was loudmouth Karen Phillips – who married Steve McDonald TWICE.

But before that she had an early role as a girl brought home by mechanic Chris Collins.

Malcolm Hebden

Fans know Street stalwart Malcolm as nosey newsagent Norris Cole.

But his original Corrie role was red-blooded Spaniard Carlos, a love interest of Mavis Riley.

Alison King

The ex-dental nurse plays fiery factory boss Carla Connor.

Yet three years before clacking on to the cobbles in Carla’s heels, Alison was Mrs Fanshaw, who seduced Jason Grimshaw.

Lisa George

She is famous to Corrie fans as gobby knicker-stitcher Beth Sutherland but Lisa has been in Corrie twice before – first as a nurse in 1997, and then as a family liaison officer in 2005.
