The actress smirked as a guest called in to quiz her on the prospect of another instalment of the hit movies after the author of the books broke the news recently that a script had already been written.
Anne confirmed: "There is a script for the third movie."
She continued: "There is a script. I want to do it, Julie wants to do it, Deborah Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it."
But, despite Anne-who plays Mia Thermopolis-and Julie-who plays Queen Clarisse Renaldi-being on board the actress, 36, revealed that they wanted to make sure the storyline for the next film was 'perfect' before it was released.
She confessed: "We all really want it to happen, it's just we don't want to do it unless it's perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it.
"It's as important to us as it is to you and we don't want to deliver anything until it's ready. But, we're working on it- so yeah!"
After waiting nearly fifteen years since the last film that saw Anne Hathaway portray the unlikely princess, fans took to social media to express their delight over the news.
One wrote: "excited for The Princess Diaries 3!!!"
While another added: "Omg, anne hathaway and julie andrews are working on princess diaries 3 IM CRYING RIGHT NOW"
A third excited fan commented: "Princess Diaries 3? With Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews? Umm yes please?!"
This isn't the first time that another sequel to the hit film has been spoken about either, as Julie Andrews teased the idea during an interview in 2017.
She said at the time: "There's talk about it. And [Anne's]'s very keen to do it. I would very willingly and happily do it."
