Annabelle 3 release date, trailer, cast, plot, spoilers and everything you need to know

The team crafting The Conjuring universe shows no sign of slowing down, as scary doll Annabelle will be creeping back into cinemas with a third film next year.

Director/producer James Wan has said he’d be up for bringing all the spooky characters together in an Avengers-style mash-up movie but as we await that super-evil-team-up we have “Untitled Annabelle Project” (as it’s currently being called) to tide us over.

Here’s everything you need to know Annabelle 3

Annabelle 3 plot – where does the film sit on the timeline?

The first two films have already given us some lore about the possessed doll. Annabelle (2014) described a cult member with the same name who killed her parents before slitting her own throat while holding the doll.

Annabelle: Creation (2017) then acted as a prequel to Annabelle (itself a prequel to The Conjuring), establishing that the doll was already super haunted way before those events. That’s thanks to the dollmaker and his wife, who invited the spirit of their dead daughter into the toy, only to find out it was really a demon that possessed the doll.

The cult member from the previous film turns out to be a girl possessed by that demon, 12 years later. It was a little bit of a movie retcon, but it worked.

The ScareDiego event at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 revealed that the third Annabelle movie is a sequel to the 2014 movie Annabelle (although confusingly it’s still technically a prequel, as it’s set before the first Conjuring movie).

The film will reportedly play out like a horror version of Night at the Museum. It will focus on what the doll gets up to after Ed and Lorraine Warren add her to their collection of cursed objects, as the demon that possesses Annabelle brings some of those other items to life.

“This is the Warrens picking up where they bring Annabelle home after we see that in The Conjuring, after they visit the nurses’ apartment. It happens a little while after that, so they bring it home and they’re aware of the doll’s evil, and sort of worry about her presence among the other artifacts. So before Conjuring 2, after [the beginning of] Conjuring,” writer Gary Dauberman told CinemaBlend.

“It’s really bringing Annabelle back home… It’s the artifact room; it’s the Warren’s house so it’s sort of in suburbia. It’s a horror movie happening inside the Warren’s house where there’s this room in their basement that houses all these kinds of evil and horror. So we kind of have a lot of fun and a lot of scares with that.”

Annabelle 3 cast – are we back with Lorraine and Ed?

It’s yet to be confirmed that Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will return as Lorraine and Ed Warren in Annabelle 3 but the plot outline suggests that’s the case.

“That is something I’m not going to confirm or deny. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, but just going off the story and all that stuff, it is inside their home,” Gary Dauberman told CinemaBlend.

We also understand that the items Annabelle brings to life will haunt the Warrens’ daughter Judy, so Sterling Jerins could return.

Annabelle 3 director and screenplay – It writer steps up to direct

Screenwriter Gary Dauberman pencilled the first two Annabelle films and as well as writing the third film he’ll also be stepping up to take on directing duties. It’s Dauberman’s first ever directorial role but James Wan will be on board once again as producer, so the franchise is in good hands.

As well as penning the Annabelle series, horror veteran Dauberman has also written It: Chapter 1 and It: Chapter 2, as well as Conjuring spinoff The Nun.

Annabelle 3 production – has filming started?

Despite getting not-so-great reviews, the 2014 movie about the cursed doll was an unquestionable hit, making $257 million worldwide. The sequel, Annabelle: Creation, wound up making even more money three years later, pulling in over $306 million around the globe.

Production on Annabelle 3 is slated to begin in 2018: “That’s going to go before cameras mid-October so I’m deep in prep on that now. We’re bringing the franchise back home after being so far away in Romania,” Gary Dauberman told CinemaBlend.

Annabelle 3 trailer – watch for the jump scares!

With shooting yet to start, there’s no trailer to enjoy/be terrified by yet but we can’t wait to get our first look at Gary Dauberman’s directorial debut.

Annabelle 3 release date – when is the third film released?

According to Entertainment Weekly the film will creep into cinemas on July 3, 2019.
