The swine was taken in from the wild by celebrity campmates after animal lover and TOWIE star Pete Wicks, 29, insisted they should not kill it.
But the poor hog was tied to a tree after it began causing mischief in camp, and managed to throttle itself to death during a struggle.
PETA Director, Elisa Allan told The Sun: "It’s time to move beyond this worn-out trope of showing crude dominance over nature – and we urge producers to scrap the use of animals in these stupid TV stunts and replace them with challenges that don’t involve bullying or purposely putting animals in harm’s way.”
A source said: “The footage will shock viewers.
“Pete is a real animal lover so told others in the camp he didn’t them to kill the pig.
“But it began making a mess in camp, going to the toilet everywhere, so they decided to tie it up so it couldn’t.
“Somehow it managed to get all worked up, and in a tragic accident it hung itself.
"Pete particularly was devastated.”
The shocking moment will be shown this Sunday as part of the series, which is filmed off the coast of Panama.
Other stars to take part in this year’s show include singer Martin Kemp, 56, Olympic rower James Cracknell, 46, and Jo Wood, 63.
A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: “The celebrities were greatly affected by what happened and footage will be shown in the programme next Sunday in order to give a faithful account of their time on the island.”
The show has been accused of cruelty to animals previously after Made In Chelsea star Ollie Locke, 30, brutally stabbed a crocodile to death.
