'America's Got Talent: The Champions': Why Winner, Shin Lim Wanted to Refuse to Do the Show at First

America’s Got Talent: The Champions came down to Shin Lim and
Darci Lynne Farmer as the final two. But it was Lim who came out on top, which is big given he just won Season 13 of the main show. It turns out, Lim first refused to do the newest competition and this is the reason why.

While America’s Got Talent fans haven’t seen some of the acts in years like Susan Boyle, Shin Lim just won the main season. It makes sense that he was about to refuse to come back so quickly.

“I’m glad I didn’t and decided to go for it,” he told People. “I initially turned Champions down because I wanted to do new stuff, I didn’t want to do repeat acts. But I decided to do it and see what happens. I thought, ‘When am I going to have a chance to do this? All the winners compete against each other, this is such a rare opportunity.’ To be part of it is an honor.”

So what was his reaction when he realized he won once again over some of the most talented acts to ever be on the show?

“It’s crazy, to be honest,” he told People. “I still have to pinch myself. First winning AGT was crazy to me, but winning Champions was even more crazy. It’s very overwhelming and super exciting.”

He went on to talk about his reaction to his competition. “To be honest, when I’m watching back all the acts, my fiancée Casey and I are like, ‘How the hell did I win this?’ Everyone is so good, if not better. Some of the acts were better than me,” he said. “I don’t think I can call myself the champion of champions because I don’t really believe it.”

The magician isn’t the only one in disbelief when it comes to his win. There were many fans rooting for Susan Boyle and took to social media. But she seems to be happy about the outcome.

Boyle was definitely a favorite and was Mel B’s Golden Buzzer. She still wasn’t able to win and she revealed what was her reaction to the news.

“Of course, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, but also deep down I didn’t think I would win. Secretly you hold out hope that you just might because that’s what drives you to do your best in a competition,” the singer told People. “I’ve never really considered myself a champion, I’m just me, Susan Boyle.”

But what does she think about Lim’s win? “He absolutely deserved to win and he absolutely deserves to have a hugely successful career with his own shows in Vegas,” she said.

Lim will return to his Vegas residency after winning $1 million from Season 13 of America’s Got Talent and $25,000 from winning America’s Got Talent: The Champions.
