All about CBB housemate and rogue trader Nick Leeson who’s famous for his crimes

Nick Leeson is setting up home in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

The former derivatives broker is famous for working at – and causing the downfall of – Barings Bank, the UK’s oldest merchant bank.

And now that he’s going into the CBB house, here’s everything you need to know about him…

Who is Nick and why is he famous?

Nick, 51, was born in Watford, and grew up to work as a derivatives broker.

He’s a rogue trader who made fraudulent and unauthorised moves that cost Barings Bank more than £800 million and directly led to its downfall in 1995.

For his part in the bank’s downfall, he was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to two counts of deceiving the bank’s auditors and of cheating the Singapore exchange, including forging documents,

He was sentenced to six and a half years in Changi Prison in Singapore.

He was released in 1999 after being diagnosed with colon cancer. He recovered despite very grim forecasts by doctors.

While in prison, Nick published an autobiography, entitled Rogue Trader, which detailed his acts.


The New York Times said the book ought to be read by banking managers and auditors everywhere, despite labelling it "dreary".

Nick’s book was made into a movie of the same name, with Ewan McGregor portraying him and Anna Friel starring as his wife Lisa, who divorced him while he was in prison.

He’s since turned his talents to motivational speaking and writing.

Nick has been named by The Sun as one of 12 housemates definitely heading into the CBB gaffe on Thursday.
