The hit Channel 4 property search show was back with new episodes, and it kicked off with Alison and Brian from Dartford. The couple, who have their first grandchild on the way, wanted to buy a second home in Denia, Spain. Armed with a budget of £160,000, they enlisted Danni’s help in finding their dream Spanish home via A Place in the Sun, ideally one which would also work for their two dogs. But the presenter was left puzzled when one of the houses she set up for the pair to tour left Alison feeling “very uncomfortable” as she quickly dismissed the property as an option.
After visiting three promising properties, Danni chose to take the couple to a semi-detached three-bed home in El Verger.
But the fourth property broke the positive pattern they had experienced until that point, with Alison immediately wanting to leave the house.
While Brian was keen to explore the property, Alison commented: “I feel really uncomfortable in here”.
She added: “It just doesn’t do it for me, it’s very dark. I’ve not got the feeling for it.”
When Brian suggested they could make changes, she shut him down, replying: “No.”
When Danni met them to discuss their feedback, the retired nursery practitioner remarked: “Oh Danni. Oh dear.”
She went on: “I just don’t feel comfortable. The previous property had such a nice feel and I just felt really good there.
“The kitchen was very dark. Even though it had really high ceilings, I just didn’t feel it had the sense of space.”
“Wow,” the property expert replied, looking perplexed. “I didn’t expect that, I’m not going to lie.
She added: “I was on a winning streak there. I’m not going to be too disappointed here, because I still have two in the running so I’m happy about that.”
But the fifth and final property also didn’t impress the husband and wife, with the spiral staircase seeming to be a deal-breaker for them.
“I’m really disappointed,” Brian commented, explaining that they had loved the other features of the home.
But eventually, the couple opted to make an offer on the third property – a three-bedroom bungalow in Els Poblets.
The modern, semi-detached, three-bed bungalow came with a private garden and a spacious terrace, as well as a bright and airy lounge-diner, which opened to the kitchen.
It had access to a communal pool and was built in 2018. Despite the property being valued at £177,027, Brian, a retired police officer, wanted to make an offer of £160,000.
The owners rejected their proposal but offered the home for £175,500 without furniture.
After Brian made a second counter-offer, he was rejected again. He wanted to make yet another offer until Alison refused.
“Okay,” he agreed. “We’ll buy it then.” Danni commented: “The look of relief on your face, Alison!”
Eventually, the retired couple chose to buy the home for £173,000.
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
