A Brief Guide to the Random Celebs in ‘A Star Is Born’

On Oct. 5, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper will bless the world with their rendition of A Star Is Born. The film is the third remake of the 1937 flick, which was remade in 1957 with Judy Garland and James Mason and again in 1976 starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. In addition to Gaga and B-Coops, the cast of 2018’s A Star Is Born is anything but ordinary by Hollywood standards. But one thing’s for sure: the film will knock your boots off, and I’m not just talking about Gaga’s incredible live performance of “Shallow.”

Below, a who’s who guide to the cast so you’re not shocked to see say, Alec Baldwin or Shangela (yep) in between all those Oscar worthy Gaga scenes:

1. Lady Gaga

If you’re familiar with Gaga’s work on American Horror Story, seeing her on the big screen isn’t much of a stretch. But if you’re coming into this with limited knowledge of Gaga’s onscreen magic, (1) what have you been doing this whole time? and (2) you’re in for one hell of a ride.

In the film, Gaga plays Ally, a struggling artist who gets discovered by Bradley Cooper’s character. She’s also the angel who belts out the “AHHH-AH-AH-AH-AHHHH-AH-AH” on stage, a moment that for a while existed only in trailer-form. An official music video has since been released for the full version for the song, “Shallow,” and you should definitely watch it at least 30 times today.

2. Bradley Cooper

It’s not unusual to see B-Coops in movies, of course, but two things are happening for the first time ever: he’s directing and singing. As big-time rocker Jackson Maine, Bradley is an established superstar who takes Ally under his wing and ultimately falls in love with her. The latter should be familiar to anyone who loves a good Hollywood musical drama (and has actually seen the other versions), but you might find yourself feeling ~things~ (good and bad) when Bradley opens his mouth for the first time to sing in the film.

And yes, it’s really his voice. As revealed in Vogue, Gaga insisted that all the musical sequences be shot live, which means the thousands of festivalgoers at Stagecoach and Glastonbury really got to enjoy a once-in-a-life time concert from Gaga and B-Coops, who should definitely go on tour as soon as the film hits the $100-million dollar mark at the box office.

3. Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle doesn’t always star in movies, but when he does, it’s usually because the movie is excellent (see You’ve Got Mail and Undercover Brother for fine examples). His last major feature was Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq in 2015. Before that, Chappelle made a documentary called Dave Chappelle’s Block Party—in 2006. So why return to the big screen now? And why A Star Is Born? After the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Chappelle simply said, “Tonight is the first night I’ve ever seen me in a good-ass movie,” so please take his word for it.

Chappelle plays Noodles, Jackson’s close friend who always seems to know the right thing to say. According to an official synopsis of the film, Noodles is also a musician, but he’s retired now.

4. Andrew Dice Clay

The eccentric stand-up comedian’s lengthy resume includes dozens of TV shows, stand-up specials, and movies, but A Star Is Born marks the first time he’ll be in a big budget Hollywood movie. In the film, he plays Gaga’s on screen dad Lorenzo, and apparently, Clay beat out Robert De Niro, John Turturro, and John Travolta for the part, so GET READY.

5. Shangela

It’s already a big deal that Shangela has been on three seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, including season three of All Stars, but an even bigger deal that she’s in a movie directed by Bradley Cooper. Shangela’s place in A Star Is Born is not completely random. For starters, you previously saw her do her thing in Lady Gaga’s “Applause” video in 2013. According to Entertainment Weekly, Gaga handpicked Shangela to play her drag mother and bar owner in A Star Is Born and even sent a personal message because the role would be “a great fit.” The rest is movie magic history.

6. Alec Baldwin

From time to time, Alec Baldwin likes to make a cameo. This is one of those times. (Along with earlier this summer, when he made a cameo as a white supremacist filming a racist PSA in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.)

7. Halsey

For a film about music, only Lady Gaga and country rock group Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (they’re B-Coops’ onscreen band) are musicians IRL. Halsey also shares this honor with her teeny, tiny cameo as herself. As she wrote on Twitter, the experience was “so humbling and unreal.”

I guess now is a good time to finally tell you guys that I have a little cameo in A Star Is Born! Thank you so so much to Gaga and Bradley for including me. It was an honor to watch both of your talent and dedication on set. ❤️ an all time life highlight for me for sure.

I play myself for a very small moment! Which is insane because it means Gaga and Bradley saw me worthy of representing a piece of the current state of music in this film forever. They could have picked any artist. It was so humbling and unreal. https://t.co/GnLTIydTX6

A Brief Ode to All the Stars Who Were Supposed to Star in A Star Is Born

If you’ve been following this remake of A Star Is Born since day one, you know the conversation dates back to at least 2002. Long before Gaga and B-Coops, it seemed like Hollywood was taking its sweet time choosing from a laundry list of A-list names. The best way to pay tribute to all these stars who could have been Ally and Jackson is of course to read their names/think of them/think about their other work while listening to “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. If you’re really into the song, might I also suggest singing along and replacing the official lyrics with the names of the following?
