8 of Celebrity Big Brother's most awkward exit interviews

Celebrity Big Brother has birthed some of the most exquisitely awkward moments on TV over the years. There’s nothing like throwing a bunch of celebs at the ebb of their careers into one house and depriving them of their luxuries to get the desperation going.

Soon enough they’re hating, hooking up or simply hammering their way through every contestant like a goddamn bulldozer (à la Kim Woodburn, luvvies).

But it’s not just in the house where the cringe resides – some of the most palm to the face moments have unfolded in that Celebrity Big Brother hot seat. With the latest series having just drawn to a close, we’ve decided to put all these magic moments together in one place.

1. Dapper Laughs – Proposing with a paper ring

Following a CBB stint nearly as controversial as his comedic career, Daniel O’Reilly, aka Dapper Laughs, decided to finally show off his soft side with his now-wife Shelly Rae by popping the question during his live eviction… with a paper ring. Anyone who doesn’t like their romance with a side of cheese, look away now.

2. Stephanie Davis – Scotty T bombshell

Some of the best-worst hot seat grillings are when the evictees have cheated on their partners with fellow housemates. Case in point: the interview with Stephanie Davis, who shaped up to be one of CBB‘s most controversial contestants after cheating on boyfriend Sam Reece with housemate Jeremy McConnell on national TV.

Her sit down with Emma was not a comfortable one to say the least, particularly when she brings up the bombshell that Stephanie’s buddy Scotty T had been rinsing her actions to the housemates. The realisation that maybe she was wrong and Gemma Collins was right must’ve been one tough pill to swallow.

3. Amanda Barrie – “Pissed, nervous or just weird?”

Amanda Barrie stirred the pot earlier this year when she chimed in on the CBB LGBTQ+ acceptance debacle, and she continued to do so well into her elimination in what is one of the most baffling hot seat interviews in the show’s history.

Buckling under the pressure and seemingly unable to answer Emma’s questions, fans took to Twitter to question Amanda’s state of mind, with one asking: “Is she pissed, nervous or just weird?” – ouch.

4. Sarah Harding – Three short weeks

She may have walked out the CBB house a winner, but that’s not to say she didn’t lose a serious chunk of dignity during her hot seat interview. Former Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding walked out to a chorus of boos last year despite being the crowning champion, in part thanks to her tumultuous rollercoaster ride in the house.

But the interview segment most difficult to watch is when she attempts to wriggle out of the cheating scandal after it was revealed she had a beau on the outside, despite her very on-screen relationship with “Bad Chad” Johnson. Did she mention she’d only been with the other guy for three weeks? Three weeks, people, three weeks. Got it? Cool. *Dusts off hands*

5. Farrah Abraham – “I kinda love myself”

As soon as Teen Mom alum Farrah Abraham was even uttered within the same sentence as Celebrity Big Brother, we knew we were in for a fracas. The girl live-streamed her ‘designer vagina’ surgery for crying out loud.

Thanks to Farrah, the 16th CBB contained fights, conflicts and dramatics galore. Yes, her exit of the house was met with monumental boos and yes, her hot seat grilling was hard to watch. Particularly when she blurts “I kinda love myself” before banging on about being “real”. Needless to say, the crowd were having none of it. Heck, even Emma was getting hacked off.

6. Jo O’Meara – The racism row

It’s been over 11 years since the CBB 5 racism row and still it remains the most controversial moment in the show’s history. Along with the late Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd, former S Club 7 singer Jo O’Meara was one of the housemates involved in the conflict against Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, with the latter stating that all Indians were thin because they were “sick all the time” as a result of undercooking their food.

The post-eviction interviews with all those involved were tense, as Big Brother OG Davina McCall relayed how the conflict had become an international incident before presenting them with the compilation video explaining why their behaviour had caused outrage across the globe.

As Jo realises the seriousness of what’s just happened, she attempts to deny she’s racist by saying her cousin’s “married to an Indian man”. It’s an uncomfortable watch to say the least.

7. Danielle Lloyd – The racism row, continued

Similarly to Jo, model Danielle’s eviction interview was difficult to watch for all the same reasons. But instead of Jo, she at least tries to apologise for her actions, which involved her calling Shilpa a “dog” and stating she should “f**k off home”. Gracious as ever, Shilpa forgave Danielle – but the nation did not forget.

8. Anne Widdecombe – Dead cat debacle

Normally it’s the contestants who bring their own levels of cringe, but earlier this year it was Emma who made the blunder when she accidentally reminded Ann Widdecombe about her lonely living situation. Here’s how the convo went:

Emma: “How do you think you’re going to fare now going back to just you with your lovely cats.”

Ann: “I don’t have any cats… I used to, but they died.”

Yikes! If that’s not a “I’ll get my coat” moment, we don’t know what is.
