10 huge shows from the '00s that are making a comeback, from Charmed to The Hills

There’s no denying that nostalgia is the flavour of our times, whether that be ’80s beats in shows like GLOW and Stranger Things or relentless revivals of classics.

Although you might think the ’00s is pushing it a bit, TV show producers don’t, and are already hard at work putting a modern spin on some of our favourite characters of 18-8 years ago.

If you’re down for a return of the shows that defined the era but you struggle to keep up with all the nostalgia, here’s a rundown of the best ’00s TV revivals making their way to the small screen in the near future.

1. Daria

These are confusing and unforgiving times, so what better way to refuel that sardonic misanthropy than with the return of Daria? Technically the show first aired on MTV in 1997, but it stomped its way into the ’00s and became an icon of the decade’s grungy teen angst.

At the turn of the millennium, when it was all boyband chintz and fancy flip phones, Daria was a proud outsider in a world of idiotic adolescents and condescending adults.

Acknowledging the thirst for a return of Daria, her bestie Jane and their oh-so-clunky goth boots, the network is bringing it back under its new production unit: MTV Studios. The revival will focus on Daria Morgendorffer and her buddy Jodie Landon, with the description stating: “These two smart young women take on the world with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.”

Here’s hoping it’ll be filled with just as much snark as the original.

2. The Hills

It looks like the rest is no longer unwritten, as everyone’s favourite reality TV show is making a comeback and it sounds set to be filled with just as much drama as the first round. It’s been eight years since The Hills ended, leaving us pining for more rivalries and romances from the dog-eat-dog world of LA’s bright young things.

Another revival from the MTV Studios, The Hills: New Beginnings was announced during the VMAs and will feature original members Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, Heidi Montag, and husband Spencer Pratt as they continue their drama-fuelled lives in the City of Angels.

Although there’s no official release date, it has been confirmed the sequel will air sometime in 2019. Hold tight, reality TV junkies!

3. Charmed

Hubble, bubble, it’s time for a Charmed double – The CW’s supernatural drama is back for another run with the first episode airing this year on October 14.

Although the reboot will follow a similar formula as the original, throwing the Charmed Ones back into the spotlight to battle demons with their witchcraft powers, it’s taken on an entirely new cast and will feature storylines that are grounded in current issues facing the world today.

The “feminist” revival is not without its critics, particularly those who are miffed that the original stars have been replaced by Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery as sisters Macy, Mel and Maggie.

However, Charmed boss Jennie Snyder Urman has said she’d like to maintain the connection between the sisters in her version, adding that “at the root of it, it’s a love story between three sisters”.

4. MTV’s MADE

Another blast from the past from MTV’s vault comes in the shape of MADE – the unscripted show in which teens with dreams are given a little boost from the network and their MADE coach to transform their lives and make their out-of-reach aspirations a reality.

Per the description: “In a world of 2D Instagram transformations, MADE pairs talented young underdogs with experts for face to face coaching for total life, real life reinventions.” No news on an air date just yet, so keep your eyes peeled on more details to come.

5. The L Word

A sequel to the hit LGBTQ+ drama The L Word is in the works, with original co-creator Ilene Chaiken confirmed as executive producer. Marja-Lewis Ryan will also serve as exec producer as well as showrunner, along with a host of familiar faces set to reprise their roles, including Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig.

While fans are thirsty for more info on the return, Showtime has kept pretty quiet about the details of the show, aside from a tidbit from the network’s president of programming, Gary Levine, who revealed: “There are a lot of revivals out there. We are working hard not to repeat ourselves. If we end up with a show that has something new to say, we will be excited to proceed.”

We also know that the reboot will be an update on the original which revolved around a group of lesbians in West Hollywood and their friends, family and lovers, and will reflect how members of that community’s lives have evolved and changed since the show first aired. The release date is currently TBA.

6. Veronica Mars

Great news for all you marshmallows out there, as after many years of deliberation, it looks like Veronica Mars will finally be returning to our screens.

Widely regarded as a show that was cut from the air too soon, the neo-noir cult classic ran for three seasons between 2004 and 2007 and starred Kristen Bell as a snarky student-turned-private investigator who spent her out of school hours cracking the toughest mysteries in the affluent town of Neptune, including the murder of her best friend Lily.

Last month it was announced that creator Rob Thomas is in talks with US streaming service Hulu for a miniseries revival. And yes, Bell is pitched to return as the titular character.

Further details are few and far between, but we do know the show is set to follow a grown-up Veronica and her life after the 2014 crowdfunded movie of the same name. Which is enough juice to keep our thirst quenched for the time being.

7. The Office

Is it time for an office reunion party? The Hollywood rumour mill certainly thinks so.

It’s only been five years since the US version of The Office said farewell with its touching season nine finale, but already talks of a tenth have been circulating. While nothing has been confirmed by NBC, in December 2017 sources did tell The Hollywood Reporter that the network is at least eyeing a potential revival of the comedy about paper-supply company Dunder Mifflin.

Since then a number of cast members have come forward to say they’d at least be open to a reunion, including Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, Angela Kinsey, Phyllis Smith and Craig Robinson. The bad news? Apparently it’s a “no” from Steve Carell. At least, that’s what he said.

Everything’s still very much in the speculation bank right now, but with the way the reboot trend has been going, a trip back to Dunder Mifflin wouldn’t seem totally out of the question. Watch this office space.

8. Roswell

As well as developing the Charmed reboot, The CW recently dropped the teaser trailer for its upcoming Roswell reboot, titled Roswell: New Mexico, at San Diego Comic-Con.

The new series is helmed by creator Carina Adly MacKenzie and based on the same Roswell High book series as the original, which ran from 1999 to 2002.

However, the story has aged the characters including Liz (Jeanine Mason), a biomedical researcher who moves back to the titular town and rekindles her relationship with high school sweetheart Max (Nathan Parsons), an alien who crash-landed in Roswell in 1947.

The first-look trailer has divided fans since its release – some are itching for the revival to reach our screens, while others reckon it’ll do the original a disservice. With Roswell: New Mexico set for an April 2019 release, only time will tell.

9. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy is a show that walked the line between the ’90s and ’00s, having aired between 1997 and 2003. But we think it warrants a mention because, let’s face it, it’s the most-hyped revival in recent times.

Ever since Fox announced its partnership with Joss Whedon to bring the beloved show back from the dead, the fandom has been divided. Some are delighted the Scooby Gang are getting a “richly diverse” modern update; others think Buffy’s corpse should be left to rest. Alas, debate is to be expected when bringing back such a wildly popular show.

Either way, it’s happening and everyone’s intrigued to see what’s in store for Sunnydale’s Hellmouth in a modern setting. No dates have been confirmed for the return, but it’s in the works, under the supervision of Monica Owusu-Breen. While we wait, we’ll just have to settle for reruns on Hulu.

10. Deadwood

Fans of HBO’s Deadwood have been clamouring for a return to the episodic masterpiece ever since it ended on season three back in 2006. Another show that was cut in its prime, the refreshingly vulgar take on the Old West is widely considered by critics to be one of the best TV shows of all time.

Although rumours of a revisit have been doing the rounds for the past ten years, HBO struck gold back in July with the news that it is officially going forward with a Deadwood TV movie, which aims to tie up loose ends from the drama’s three-season run.

The announcement was made by HBO programming president Casey Bloys at the TCA summer press tour, stating: “All of these people worked hard to get this together. It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all the cast members’ schedules together, but we are there. It is greenlit.”

Bloys went on to describe how “it’s a terrific script” and that the team is eyeing an October shooting start with the film potentially airing as early as Spring 2019. Which we think you’ll all agree is some mother-f**kin’ fantastic news.
