From having ‘raging sunburn’ to endlessly apologising: Travellers reveal the tell-tale signs that ‘scream someone is British’

  • Hundreds of people contributed to an online discussion about British traits
  • Brits’ seeming inability to deal sensibly with scorching weather was highlighted
  • One user said that having a love of tea was a sure-fire sign of a Brit

How can you tell if someone is British?

It’s easy. For starters, have a look to see if they have a ‘raging sunburn’.

That’s just one tell-tale sign that’s been revealed by travellers contributing to an online discussion that came about after someone posed the question – ‘what things scream “I’m British?”‘

Brits seeming inability to deal sensibly with hot weather is a character trait, it seems

It was posted on internet forum Reddit and hundreds filed an answer.

Many commentators highlighted that there are some phrases only British people use.

‘Snowy792’ said: ‘Slapping your knees and saying “right!” Before leaving.’

While ‘No-sleep-Addict’ added: ‘When you leave the house and forget something so have to go back into the house, someone will say “that was quick”.’

Endlessly apologising is another very British trait, according to the forum.

‘SpaceRigby’ said: ‘Someone bumped into me and I turned around and apologised. They also apologised. I apologised back. It’s been two weeks. Send help.’

And ‘linergirl’ wrote: ‘Using 10 different forms of “goodbye” at the end of a telephone conversation – Ok, take care, bye, ta-ra, bye, see you soon.’

Trips to the pub were also mentioned with ‘ptdoe 1’ saying: ‘When someone smashes a glass at a pub everyone going “weheyyyy”.’

The weather was also a common theme in answers, especially Brits’ seeming inability to deal sensibly with hot weather.

One Reddit fan, ‘robotobo’, said: ‘I’m in SE Asia right now, and it seems like having a raging sunburn is pretty British.’

While ‘LiquidMotivation’ added: ‘Pretending summer doesn’t exist, and that every year there is just an “unnatural” heat wave.’

And delightedbanana said: ‘Excessive nationwide drinking because the sun came out.’

Inflation was discussed, too, with ‘Jfof_ 1827’ chipping in with ‘measuring inflation by Freddo prices’.

One pointed out that there is even a ‘Freddo index’.

One American said having an avid love of tea was the ultimate British trait

For American ‘puppehplicity’, having an avid love of tea was the ultimate British trait.

She said: ‘Seriously, I do not understand how you can drink so much tea. It’s customary in the U.S. to have a cup of coffee in the morning, but apparently you guys drink several cups of tea throughout the day?’

Another tell-tale sign of Britishness is apparently queuing without barriers, according to ‘IsDinosaur’. And franksBestToeKnife said: ‘Deciding (as a nation) that a multi-million pound research vessel should be called Boaty McBoatface.’

Certain views on the French betray Britishness, too, it seems, with Zeruvi saying that Brits have an ‘irrational hatred of the French’.

Insincere invites does it for ‘john_wb’, meanwhile. He wrote: ‘Telling someone to drop by the next time they’re in town and then being horrified when they do. ‘

But for KDY_ISD, he simply replied to being asked ‘what screams I’m British?’ by saying: ‘Trick question, screaming isn’t British.’
