PACKING experts have revealed a three-layer packing system that can save passengers money on their hand luggage.
Airlines boost their revenue by charging customers extra for bigger bags, meaning passengers have to be clever with their packing.
That's why travel experts at Wild Packs have shared what they believe to be the best method for packing suitcases, warning that overweight luggage can end up costing as much as £65.
They recommend packing suitcases in layers to maximise as much luggage space as possible and reduce the likelihood of clothes creasing.
Arranging items in layers can also equally distribute the weight of the suitcase and keep it from tipping over, protecting delicate belongings like necklaces, earrings and other accessories.
Bottom Layer: Shoes, toiletry bag, electronics, makeup
The first thing that should be packed is shoes at the very bottom of the suitcase, near the wheels.

Stuffing them with socks can help to maximise as much space in the as possible. This will also help to retain as much of the shoes’ shape as possible as they can get squashed by the other layers of clothing.
Makeup should also be placed at the bottom of the case, as well as toiletries in a secure, zipped-up waterproof bag, to avoid any leaks or spills from ruining the contents of the suitcase.
Certain electronics like phone chargers can be near the bottom of the suitcase alongside shoes and toiletries.
Spreading the heavier items along the bottom of the suitcase will help centre the weight and prevent it from tipping over.

Liquids and gels should be packed in a separate waterproof bag and placed near the top of the case.
Middle Layer: Jeans, sweaters, t-shirts, shorts, accessories, underwear, socks
Rolling clothes instead of folding them will take up less space and reduce the chance of wrinkles and creases.
Filling empty spaces and crevices with underwear, socks and accessories can minimise overpacking.
Packing accessories in these spaces between clothes also reduces the risk of them breaking during travel.
Top Layer: Suits, dresses, jackets, towels, liquids, gels
Carefully fold suits, dresses and jackets to avoid them creasing and place them gently on top, making sure not to stuff them inside the suitcase to avoid wrinkles.
Certain toiletries that are easily spillable like liquids and shower gels should be placed in a separate waterproof zip bag at the top of the suitcase to protect them from getting squeezed once the case is closed.
Suit jackets can be laid on top of already-packed clothing, folding the arms if need be, to avoid creasing.
This can also be done for beach towels.
