The best places to look for travel insurance when you've been diagnosed with cancer

Reader Margaret Holyland wrote in for some advice about getting travel insurance after being diagnosed with cancer.

Q: "I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February – but results from a recent trial show the cancer is stable.

"I am looking to get travel insurance cover – for cancellation, lost luggage and accident abroad, etc.

"I am 75 years old and pretty fit otherwise."

A: Getting insurance for a trip while undergoing treatment or even post-treatment for cancer can be tough. There are two options to help you get the right cover for the right price.

The first is to go with an insurance broker who will approach a variety of companies with your specific needs.

Cancer Research UK's website has suggestions for brokers and some specific companies with good feedback, including Freedom Travel Insurance, InsureCancer, AllClear Insurance, Free Spirit and Towergate.

Alternatively, use websites such as travelsupermarket.com or moneysupermarket.com to compare the policies of several specialist providers in one place.

Their comparison tools will ask you questions about your health – it is always better to give as much information as possible and declare everything necessary to make sure you are getting exactly the right cover for your needs.

If you do forget to mention something, it could render your policy invalid.

Before booking your holiday, discuss with your policy provider that they are happy with the country and the holiday itself.

Compare single and multi-trip policies to see which is most cost-effective – the results can sometimes be surprising.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
