The voters, all readers of Elite Traveler, certainly know a thing or two about posh restaurants, because they eat in them. They voted Restaurant de L’Hôtel de Ville in Crissier, Switzerland – where the tasting menu costs 390 Swiss francs (£310) – as the top restaurant on planet Earth.

In second place on the list is Alinea in Chicago, New York’s famed Eleven Madison Park comes third and flying the flag for Britain is Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, which comes first in the UK ranking and 11th globally.

Elite Traveler’s expert editors say that Restaurant de L’Hôtel de Ville is a ‘somewhat surprising champion’ on this year’s list, which is now in its eighth year.

The fine dining spot, helmed by chef Franck Giovannini, climbed all the way from ninth position in 2018 to steal the crown from six-time winner, Alinea.

Alinea offers a selection of innovative tasting menus costing from $190 (£149) to $395 (£311), and diners are told to expect a ‘delicious, fun, emotional, and provocative’ sensory experience.

Third-placed Eleven Madison Park offers lunch and dinner tasting menus for $335 (£264) a pop.

Elite Traveler reveals how head chef Daniel Humm rustles up ‘quirky and lighthearted’ dishes ‘offering up the very best in contemporary French cuisine’. There is also a selection of fine wines on offer, including one of the world’s priciest bottles of burgundy – a Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2015 – priced at $15,000 (£11,848).

Turning traditional Italian cuisine on its head is Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, which has been ranked fourth by the Elite Traveler jetsetters.

Alinea, which is now ranked number two, offers a selection of innovative tasting menus, and diners are told to expect a ‘delicious, fun, emotional, and provocative’ sensory experience. Above, an example of one of the artistically crafted morsels one can expect

Plated up at third place is Manhattan’s Eleven Madison Park, which offers lunch and dinner tasting menus for $335 (£264) a pop

Head Chef Massimo Bottura is famed for his zany dessert ‘Oops, I Dropped The Lemon Tart!’, which is, quite literally, a lemon tart that has been dropped upside down onto the plate.

A 12-course tasting menu here, with wine included, costs €480 (£426/$539).

In at fifth place on the top 100 list is Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, Spain. The restaurant is housed within an impressive glass structure which looks out over farmland where ingredients are cultivated.

There are two tasting menus on offer, both priced at €220 (£195). Dishes include ‘fermented apple’, ‘flame roasted red mullet’, ‘stewed piglet’ and ‘truffled egg’. The eatery also prides itself on its milk and corn breads, with these fresh-baked goods highlighted on its website.

To wash it all down, there’s a vast array of wine to choose from, or if it’s bubbles you’re after, a 125ml glass of 2000 Dom Perignon might pique your interest. The £155 price tag, however, might not.

The other British restaurants to make the list include London institutions Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (24th), The Ledbury (33th), Core by Clare Smyth (50th) Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (79th) and La Dame de Pic London (94th).
