Scandinavian Airlines flies Florence-bound passengers to Bologna, Italy, instead

Scandinavian Airlines passengers bound for Florence, Italy, were instead delivered to Bologna, roughly 70 miles away, on Thursday.

In a statement to USA TODAY Friday, airline spokesperson Freja Annamatz explained the change in Italian destinations for Flight SK2961 was due to a missing flight route. But by the time the mistake was discovered, Scandinavian was left with two choices: either take the passengers somewhere close or don’t take them all.

“Safety is always our first priority. During preparations by the gate it was discovered that the flight route information was missing,” she said. “The decision to fly to a close-by destination, Bologna, was made instead of canceling the flight. This (decision was made) in order to get the passengers to their destination as soon as possible.”

Upon landing in Bologna, the passengers were then driven to Florence by bus.

“We apologize for any inconvenience to our passengers who were being taken care of and transported to Florence by bus from Bologna,” the statement continued.
