Ryanair cancel flights at the last minute during today’s huge strike and passengers complain of travel chaos

With 250 flights cancelled today, affecting 40,000 passengers, some have have complained of cancellations happening at the boarding gate.

Customers have taken to Twitter to complain about the last-minute cancellations.

Twitter user Harriet Bishop wrote: "Well done @Ryanair for ruining a holiday & costing us hundreds 2hrs before take off.

“Lesson learnt the hard way never to fly with such a useless airline.”

User @Myrrhflower wrote: "Our flight was cancelled at the gate!! Half an hr after leaving gate area we get a sms txt: we’re sorry your flight is cancelled. Amazing customer service Ryanair."

User Steph Dermott said: “@Ryanair Due to cancellations today, I have had to book alternative flights with another airline as members of our party need to be home for childcare commitments.

“Will I be refunded for these flights as well as my original flights that have been cancelled? Thanks.”

Greg Cheesman said: “Well done @Ryanair for telling me to arrive 2 hours early for my flight and then cancelling 90 mins before it’s due to leave. Now you’ve completely f***ed up my weekend”

Anastaija Duk tweeted: “Oi, @Ryanair! Dare to explain cancelled flights to London from Lithuania this morning when there was nothing about it?”

A Ryanair spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: "Customers whose flights are affected by this regrettable strike action today (28 Sep) are entitled to a full refund, free move on to the next available flight or free transfer to an alternative flight."

They continued: "Despite the regrettable and unjustified strike action taking place in 6 of our 37 markets today, all 400 first wave aircraft departed on schedule this morning.

Ryanair cancelled 150 flights today due to an "unnecessary" strike in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy.

On Thursday the airline said pilots in Germany would also be going on strike, with another 100 flights shelved as a result.

Ryanair's chief operations officer Peter Bellew said the action was "deeply regrettable".

He said: "It is deeply disappointing that some of our customers and our people in Germany tomorrow will have their flights disrupted by an unnecessary strike called at short notice.”

The strikes are the latest in a series of walkouts by staff at Europe's largest low-cost airline.

On September 12 dozens of flights were cancelled in Germany after pilots and flight attendants refused to work for 24 hours.

In August several days of strikes involving staff in Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands saw hundreds of flights cancelled.

Earlier this month Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said strikes by pilots were necessary to keep air fares down.

He insisted industrial disputes with the airline's staff have caused "minimal disruption" as he pledged not to "roll over".

If my flight is cancelled can I get my money back?

If your flight has been cancelled due to strike action you should be entitled to either a refund or a booking on another flight with the company.

Caroline Vicente, a travel expert from Colombus Direct said: "If it is a European airline if you are due to travel during this time and your flight is cancelled you are protected.

"You have the option to take an alternative flight with the airline to your destination, or cancel your flight and claim a full refund.

"If the alternative flight Ryanair offer isn't at the right time for you, Ryanair is legally required to book you on a comparable flight with them or an alternative airline. You should not be charged more for this."

Sun Online Travel previously revealed that a passenger on a Ryanair flight who ran onto the tarmac after a plane and was arrested flashed his bum at a court appearance in Dublin.
