Cuba has been hit by a devastating tornado which tore through Havana, leaving three people dead and 172 injured.
The aftermath has seen overturned or crushed cars, fallen trees blocking roads and battered buildings following the strong winds.
While the worst of the storm seems to be over, it will no doubt have left some holidaymakers questioning their travel plans, especially if they’re due to visit the Caribbean island over the next few days.
However, it seems that future travel plans are currently unaffected – probably because a tornado is such a rare occurrence for the Caribbean island.
At the time of writing, the Foreign Office hasn’t made any changes to its usual Cuba travel advice .
If you do have a package holiday booked over the next few days, you should contact your tour operator before you travel, who will be able to advise you if there are any changes to your booking.
If you booked your flights and hotel separately, get in touch with your airline and hotel directly, before you travel.
It’s worth noting that the tornado hit certain neighbourhoods in Havana such as Cerro, Santo Suárez, Luyanó, Vía Blanca, Regla and Chibás. Therefore, if you had planned to visit elsewhere on the island it’s unlikely that your holiday will be affected.
Tornadoes are a rare occurrence in Cuba, although the island is no stranger to storms with hurricane season running from June to November.
Because tornadoes are rare in Cuba, it’s unlikely that your holiday will be cancelled, although if you were planning to stay in Havana it’s worth double checking whether your hotel has been changed – again, your tour operator will be able to advise you.
You should also check your travel insurance policy before you set off so you’re aware of what is and isn’t covered should there be any changes to your booking as a result of the tornado.
