The Z Hotel Trafalgar in London review

Instead of catering purely to the usual pin-stripe city brigade, the new concept has a casual coffee shop meets Silicon Valley campus vibe.

No jackets and ties for the friendly check-in staff, just open shirts and broad smiles.

The hotel is worth the visit for the incredible food at the Penny Squares restaurant alone!

What is there to do at the Canopy by Hilton London City?

All the decor at Canopy hotels is themed to reflect local cultures, and the art here takes a nod to the Huguenot silk weavers who settled in nearby Spitalfields (well worth a visit) in the 17th century.

What is there to eat and drink at the Canopy by Hilton London City?

As well as Spitalfields, foodie heaven at Borough Market and Brick Lane are walking distance.

But it’s worth saving space to sample the East End inspired dishes at the hotel’s restaurant Penny Squares.

The tapas-style menu has a middle-eastern theme.

Tamarind marinated cod with coconut dahl, baby squid and curry oil is flaky and fragrant.

And the Za’atar braised beef cheek with crushed cumin celeriac, garlic spinach and thyme sauce was too good to share.

Half a dozen dishes comfortably feeds four people – and that’s without the warm vanilla kataifi with nutella and hazelnut ice cream for pudding.

Meanwhile its Freedom Caffe, named after Freedom Press Publishing House in Whitechapel High Street, has the cocktail menu printed on an in-house newspaper.

Their take on the espresso martini – dubbed London City Spice – was a caffeine fuelled favourite.

What are the rooms at the Canopy by Hilton London City like?

The bespoke eco-building is bristling with green credentials.

There are no plastic bottles of water in the rooms, just reusable glass bottles which can be refilled with filtered water.

Every room gets a monsoon walk-in shower, a Nespresso machine and the traditional hotel slippers have been given the boot, replaced by a comfy pair of warm slipper socks.
