Brit mum slammed for leaving housekeeping staff used toiletries as a TIP after Benidorm holiday

A HOLIDAYMAKER has sparked a furious debate after being condemned for the “demeaning” act of leaving half-used bottles of toiletries as a thank you to hotel cleaning staff.

Brit mum Lizzie Hanbury uploaded a snap of her gift on a Facebook page dedicated to the popular Spanish resort of Benidorm.

She also thoughtfully penned a hand-written note in Spanish thanking the house-keeping staff for their efforts in keeping her room spick and span.

The haul of freebies included a pair of unwanted sunglasses, baby oil, Radox shower gel, Alberto Balsam shampoo, body spray and a mesh shower pouf.

She also said she’d left toys and sweets.

Lizzie wrote: “Ready for the cleaners tomorrow, includes toys and sweets if they have little ones flying home in the morning.”

But she has been left stunned by the avalanche of abuse she received for her gesture.

Almost 200 people commented on the post on Benidorm Seriously before the debate was closed by administrators due to the level of abuse aimed at Lizzie.

One person said: “I’m thinking the cleaners would appreciate some €€€€ as a tip rather than the leftover toiletries, I find it rather demeaning, would anyone leave the cleaners in the UK hotels left over shampoo as a tip for cleaning?”

Another added: “I would actually find it very rude, people leaving me left over toiletries!! It’s certainly not a gift or a present it’s your left overs you don’t want to take home, god knows what someone has done with them.”

Louise Wagstaff shared a snap of a thank you note she left with a saucer of money and unwanted bottles of booze.

Ian said of Lizzie’s leftovers: “The staff work hard for very poor wages. Instead of insulting them with all the crap you would throw away anyway do the decent thing and leave a decent cash tip (at least 1 Euro per day).

“You spend thousands on your Benidorm holiday but you can't afford to leave a decent tip?

“Tip staff properly instead of insulting them with your leftovers!”

The last word went to the admin, Tracy, who wrote: “Unbelievable someone does something nice for a change and get abuse for it.

How much to tip is always a hotly debated topic, with different etiquette around the world.

Earlier this year, a former maid claimed that hotel guests should be tipping housekeeping staff at least £7.50 per person every day.

She also suggested that guests should help by picking up the towels.
