Your Sony Xperia smartphone will look massively inferior from tomorrow – here’s why

If you own a Sony Xperia smartphone then you could find it looks a little inferior from tomorrow morning. The Japanese technology giant is about to unleash its next generation of smartphones and there could be some significant upgrades coming soon. The grand unveiling will take place from 7:45am via a live stream which can be viewed online.

The big announcement was due to take place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but this global event has been cancelled due to coronavirus fears forcing Sony to change its plans.

So what updates could be inbound from Sony and its Xperia brand?

There’s no official word on what the firm will unveil tomorrow but we’re expecting a big upgrade to its flagship Xperia 1 device.

This phone was first unveiled in February 2019 so it would certainly make sense for it to get a refresh this month.

Rumours are rife that this new phone will get a host of new features with renowned tipster OnLeaks even posting pictures of how it could look.

The handset, that appears in the pictures, reveals a new 6.6-inch all-screen design with smaller bezels than the previous Xperia 1. It also seems like the hardware will boast dual front-facing speakers and a quad-camera system which now sits to one side of the phone rather than being placed in the centre.

The only slight confusion is that they are calling this device the Xperia 5 Plus and not the Xperia 1.

Away from this leak we’re expecting all the usual changes including a faster processor, bigger and battery and faster charging.

One thing that remains unclear is whether Sony will finally embrace 5G. Many of its Android rivals, including OnePlus, Huawei and Samsung, are now adopting this superfast network technology so it would certainly make sense for the Xperia to join the party.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens during the live event tomorrow but ahead of this flagship launch, Sony has already revealed one device.

Called the Xperia L4 this is Sony’s new entry-level smartphone.

For your money, you’ll get a 6.2-inch HD+ LCD screen, triple-lens camera and Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 processor.

There’s also a 3,580mAh which can be fast-charged Sony’s Xperia Adaptive Charging monitors your phone as it charges, ensuring that the battery isn’t overworked and stays healthy for longer.

There’s no word on official price or release date but expect it to cost under £200 when it arrives sometime in the spring.

Xperia L4 is available in a choice of two colours, Black and Blue and will be available in select markets from Spring 2020 onwards.

Express.co.uk will be bringing you all the news live from Sony’s announcement so make sure you check back for all the updates from 7:45am.
