You can now buy a Bluetooth cassette player for all your old mix tapes

It might be time to dig out those old mix tapes because the ultimate 1980s music accessory is making a comeback.

Yes, we’re talking about cassette tapes.

That’s because a Kickstarter project launched by a company called NINM Lab is attempting to fund the revival of the iconic 80’s gadget. The company claims it has built the ‘world’s first Bluetooth portable cassette player,’ and has already more than tripled its £10,243 funding target.

The IT’S OK cassette player is modeled on the famous Sony Walkman (which turned 40 years old last week) and has Bluetooth on board so you can listen to those scratchy Guns N’ Roses albums through wireless headphones.

And because the casing is transparent (albeit in a choice of three colours: cloud white, sakura pink and evening blue) you can show off your precise labeling. Even though it supports wireless headphones, you can still plug in a regular pair if you want to go truly old school.

‘This is a generation in which almost everyone owns a pair of Bluetooth headphones. IT’S OK allows you to wear your most comfortable and familiar pair of headphones and to enjoy the sound of the ‘80s in times when you need to be alone,’ NINM Lab writes on its Kickstarter page.

‘You will no longer be limited by the 3.5mm wire. Whether you are on bus, brewing coffee, or at work, you can listen on-the-go freely and unrestrained. Especially those who love cassettes, you no longer need to bring two pairs of headphones out.’

‘Time in a cassette tape can be measured; time in reality can be fully filled and time can be possessed. We learned slowly to anticipate as waiting is elegant, and hope is romantic. The cassette tape not only records music, but also the weight of time.’

The only pricing tier left is for £60, which gets you the player and a blank cassette tape.

The Kickstarter is due to run until August 5 and the Hong Kong-based company states deliveries will be fulfilled by December 2019. Which should give you plenty of time to dig out all your old tapes from the back of the attic.
