Windows 7 end of life: Microsoft fans don’t have long to make the jump to Windows 10

Microsoft has announced it will start to notify Windows 7 Pro users that support for the 2009 operating system will cease on January 14, 2020.

The Redmond firm had already started alerting Windows 7 Home users a move to Windows 10 was necessary to protect their hardware from viruses and other security compromises.

Microsoft has said the notifications being delivered to Windows 7 users are designed to provide time to make the transition to its current operating system as smooth as possible.

The tech giant said: “If you are a Windows 7 customer, you can expect to see a notification appear on your Windows 7 PC.

“This is a courtesy reminder that you can expect to see a handful of times in 2019. By starting the reminders now, our hope is that you have time to plan and prepare for this transition.”

Microsoft has explained that while it’s possible your current machine will be able to update to Windows 10, this will not provide the best user experience.

Instead the tech giant has encouraged fans to ditch their current computer in favour of new, more powerful, hardware.

Microsoft’s valiant efforts to get its loyal fans to switch from Windows 7 appear to be paying off.

Throughout the entirely of 2019, the market share of Windows 7 has continued to fall, according to figures from NetMarketShare.

In January the decade-old operating system was still clinging onto a whopping 37.19 percent of global marketshare.

To demonstrate the sheer scale of Windows 7’s user base, Apple’s latest macOS version was said to have a 5.12 percent share during the same period.

As of September this year though, Windows 7’s market share crumbled by almost 10 percent. NetMarketShare said the Microsoft software was leveraged by 28.17 percent of global users.

Conversely, during the same period, Windows 10 was shown to have grown in stature. This seems to confirm Microsoft users are indeed migrating to the newer operating system.

NetMarketShare’s newest figures declare Windows 10 to have a whopping 52.38 percent of global computer operating system market share.
