WhatsApp releases its biggest change in years but fans don’t like it one bit

WhatsApp appears to be making some unpopular decisions right now. Firstly there was the inclusion of the Facebook logo every time the app is opened on your smartphone. Then WhatsApp stopped supporting millions of iPhone and Android devices meaning some users are being forced to buy a new smartphone if they want to continue messaging friends and family.

Now it seems one of the most dramatic changes to the way this service looks is not going down as well as the Facebook-owned firm may have hoped.

WhatsApp dark mode has been one of the most anticipated upgrades in years with the update now officially rolling out to some users who have signed up to the firm’s beta programme.

There’s no general release date for dark mode but with things now being tested by users in the wild, it can’t be long until we all get our hands on this refreshed new look.

However, before you get too excited about your chats going dark, it’s worth checking out some of the early – and not very favourable – reviews.

Many of those lucky enough to have installed the new WhatsApp design on their phones aren’t exactly showering it with praise.

Reddit forums are full of people moaning about the dark mode with one saying “Why is Whatsapp Android’s new dark mode so ugly? It is just horrible compared to all other dark modes, and it doesn’t have an AMOLED dark mode option.”

Agreeing, another user added: “I was about to post the same thing. It’s so damn ugly!”

And the hate for this look doesn’t end there with one more WhatsApp fan saying: “I don’t like it because it isn’t a real good dark mode. “Also, they seem to think that it will save you battery, because they have an auto setting based on battery saver, when, since there is no black, it saves no battery.”

It’s not just the general public who are criticising this latest change with the team at TechRadar also highlighting issues with the design.

As noted by the technology website, the fact that WhatsApp has used a darkish green background rather than black means that those with AMOLED displays on their phones won’t get the full benefit of dark mode – including saving battery.

TechRadar also says that the stark white text that punches through the background is also “a little hard on the eyes.”

Of course, WhatsApp is still testing dark mode in beta so it may change before it’s released in full but it seems that one of the most exciting updates in years may have a few unpleasant flaws.

Express.co.uk will bring you more news on an official release just as soon as we find out more.
