WhatsApp insiders have hinted at a new feature that’ll tie the popular messaging app even closer to its parent company.
According to Wabetainfo.com, the messaging service is working on a ‘Share to Facebook’ feature that would allow for quick sharing to a user’s Facebook Story.
The blog is quick to point out that this isn’t yet available – but that it should be coming soon.
It would be added as a shortcut to the WhatsApp Status feature, which is already a carbon copy of Instagram Stories.
The move would seem to make sense, given the plans to integrate WhatsApp with Facebook and Instagram. Earlier this year, Facebook stated: ‘We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks.’
Wabetainfo shared a screengrab allegedly showing the 2.19.151 build of WhatsApp where the option to share with Facebook is clearly visible.
The blog goes on to explain that ‘Using this option, WhatsApp will allow to post your status updates on Facebook, that contain images, videos, GIFs and text.’
It reinforces the point that the sharing is not done automatically – the user will have to manually share it with Facebook.
WhatsApp recently found itself at the center of a security scare when it emerged spyware could be spread through the app.
The app discovered a vulnerability that allowed attackers to install malicious code on iPhones and Android phones by ringing up a target device.
In a statement, WhatsApp said: ‘We believe a select number of users were targeted through this vulnerability by an advanced cyber actor.
‘This attack has all the hallmarks of a private company known to work with governments to deliver spyware that reportedly takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems.
‘We have briefed a number of human rights organisations to share the information we can, and to work with them to notify civil society.’
WhatsApp rolled out a security fix and urged all its 1.5 billion users to update the app as soon as possible.
