What to expect from Apple’s September iPhone event

Apple's latest event is fast-approaching, and there are few things more impressive in the Tech world than the way the company unveils its latest array of products. Whether it's iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac or a surprise or two, the company loves to put on a show.

September is generally when the latest iPhone models are announced, but there's often plenty more to look forward to. Read on for our handy guide.

When Is The Apple Event?

Apple's latest and greatest will be unveiled tomorrow, 10th September at 6 pm BST. It usually runs between an hour and a half and two hours in length, so grab your popcorn and settle in.

How Can I Watch The Event?

The event will stream live on Apple's website and Twitter and be available to view on demand a few hours later as per usual, but it'll also be available live on YouTube for the first time.

It's a far cry from a few years ago where fans had to stream via Safari or Edge on MacOS.

What Can We Expect To Be Shown At The Event?

iPhone

There's a 99.9 per cent chance of the new iPhone being unveiled, such is the timing of the event. Most excitingly is that there's a chance we'll see THREE new phones.

Allegedly the iPhone 11 will offer a comparable device to the cheaper XR, while the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will be analogous to the current generation XS and XS Max.

The key upgrades gleaned from leaks are improved Face ID (allowing it to work when the device is laying on a desk for example), a vastly improved camera (with the two higher-end devices getting a third lens on the back) and the ability to charge other devices wirelessly by laying them on the phone's back – a la Samsung devices.

One of the more curious rumours is that the iPhone will be getting a new stylus, essentially as a smaller Apple Pencil. Considering Steve Jobs' thoughts on styluses, we're dubious – but it wouldn't be the first time we've been surprised at a September event.

We'll also get a final release date for iOS 13 which brings numerous new features including Dark Mode.

Apple Watch

Don't expect a lot from Apple's wearable this year. Last year the device got a huge upgrade with a new design and new health features. New materials are rumoured, as well as sleep-tracking, but expect a release date for WatchOS 6 at the very least.

Apple TV

With the company's new streaming service arriving later this year, there's a good chance a new Apple TV device could be coming too. Given the price of Apple TV compared to things like Google's Chromecast or Amazon's FIRE TV stick, there's also the possibility of Apple launching a smaller "dongle" version of the platform at a cheaper price point.

Expect a firm date for the new TV service to start streaming, as well as pricing information. Given the huge catalogue of content on Netflix and similar, and with the emerging threat of Disney's new Disney+ service, Apple will have to play this just right.

Apple Arcade

Another fresh subscription service, this one takes some cues from Xbox's Game Pass service. Apple Arcade has no release date or pricing information, and we still don't know which games will help launch the service, but for someone with multiple devices being able to play one hundred games for a monthly price (rumoured to be $4.99 per month) across iOS, macOS and iPadOS could be great value.

Anything Else?

There's always a chance that Mac gets some love at the event, but outside of a final release date for macOS Catalina, we'd expect a quiet showing with the potential for an event in October to show off the long-rumoured 16-inch Macbook Pro.

Similarly, expect a fairly quiet showing for iPad too, aside from an iPadOS release date – the range has essentially received a top-to-bottom refresh over the last year.

Curiously, it does sound as though Apple is preparing a new product category. Similar to Tile, the rumoured Apple Tag will be a way of locating lost items using a combination of Augmented-Reality and a local network created by millions of iPhones the world over.

As for the "one more thing" surprise at the end of the conference, we're hoping for a cheaper HomePod, Apple headphones or the AirPower charging mat that was allegedly cancelled due to being a bit of a fire risk.

We'll update this article during the event, so keep this page bookmarked.
