Warning for anyone who visits adult sites as users targeted with convincing scam

There's lots of stuff you probably shouldn't be looking at on the Internet—but pop-ups are the worst of them all.

At least, that's if a new warning from cybersecurity experts is to be believed. The folks at MalwareBytes have issued a warning to all Windows 10 and 11 users who visit X-rated adult websites to avoid clicking on any pop-up windows.

Apparently, cybercriminals have created a series of fake full-screen popup windows which mimic an official Microsoft update and urge users to install them.

The dodgy popups are appearing on different websites online including X-rated web pages, and while they might look official, clicking 'Install' on them will infect your PC with dangerous Aurora malware.

It even uses the same colour scheme as an official Microsoft update, which is partly why it's so convincing.

Around 30,000 people have already been targeted by the pop-ups with a further 600 actually installing the malware.

Windows updates will never appear in a browser window or pop-up, so if you do see something, make sure to ignore it and close your Internet browser.

MalwareBytes said: "Windows users are quite familiar with system updates, often interrupting hours of work or popping up in the middle of an intense game.

"When that happens, they just want to install whatever needs to be installed and get on with their day

"A threat actor is buying popunder ads targeting adult traffic and tricking victims with what appears to be a system security update."

While it's not easy to block spam or popup windows online, there are browsers which come with automatic popup blockers that can help filter out scams like this,.

One such browser, Brave, not only blocks ads but comes with a super Incognito mode and even pays users to look at ads.
