Vodafone 5G launch live – Cities, price and where you can it revealed

Vodafone will be the second UK network to debut 5G following EE’s launch back in May.

Vodafone has declared its 5G network will arrive in seven UK cities to begin with but will expand to 12 others by the end of this year.

Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London will be the first to receive the rapid new network.

However, these cities will be joined by Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton before 2019 is over.

While not the first to debut its 5G network, Vodafone will be premier to allow for 5G roaming.

UK customers will be able to travel to Germany, Italy and Spain and use 5G, assuming you are in a supported area, without incurring extra charges.

The network has also declared the prices of its 5G plans will be the “same as 4G for both consumers and business customers”.

To start with, Vodafone will be offering 5G plans with two handsets: the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G.

The former is the biggest version of the South Korean flagship, touting a colossal 6.7-inch display, four cameras on its rear and a sizeable 4,500mAh battery.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s Mi MIX 3 5G offers an all-screen design thanks to a unique sliding mechanic, rapid internals and a capable photography array.

Commenting on the launch of its 5G network Nick Jeffery, Vodafone’s UK CEO, said: “We started our 5G journey more than three years ago. We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together.

“We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption. And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.

“This is important. It means we can today announce the largest launch of 5G in the UK and be the first to announce 5G roaming. It means that UK businesses can lead the world in adopting 5G to boost productivity and attract investment.

“It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.”

Vodafone will be announcing further details about its 5G network later today; Express.co.uk will be updating this page with the latest announcements.
