Virgin Media has announced that, from today, some customers will be able to subscribe to a new Essential broadband plan which offers an internet connection at a much lower price. Virgin says that it has launched this ‘Essential ‘ service to help those facing financial hardship during these turbulent times.
The new plan includes unlimited broadband for £15 per month with Virgin stating that there’s no fixed-term contract to sign and the promise of no price increases.
At 15Mbps, the Essential plan isn’t particularly fast – the UK average is 60Mbps – but it should be enough to keep families connected to the web.
Virgin’s Essential broadband is available to anyone receiving Universal Credit with customers able to apply for this discounted service on Virgin’s website.
To be eligible you’ll need to supply proof of your Universal Credit with customers then receiving confirmation that their application has been successful before they are moved onto the plan.
Speaking about the plan Jeff Dodds, Chief Operating Officer at Virgin Media, said: “The launch of our Essential broadband service is about supporting customers who are experiencing financial difficulty and uncertainty. We all know how important connectivity is right now to our day to day lives, so this reliable, hassle-free service will help people to get online and carry out essential activities.
“We are committed to supporting our customers and will continue to play our vital role in keeping the country connected in these difficult times.”
Although 15Mbps is well below the UK average speed, the fact Virgin is offering this connection at such a low price and without the need to sign up to any long-term contracts will be welcomed by many who are concerned about taking on a large financial commitment in the current climate.
At the other end of the scale is Virgin’s Gig1 service which is rolling out in more places across and costs £62 per month with an 18-month contract to sign.
This plan beams the web into homes at speeds of over 1Gbps which is fast enough to download a full HD movie in a matter of seconds.
However, over the term of the contract, Gig1 will set you back more £1,100 which is pretty expensive.
Over the same period, Essential broadband will cost £270.
