Turn your voicemails into texts with this hidden iPhone feature

In the age of sending voicenotes over WhatsApp or iMessage on your iPhone, old-school phone functions such as calls, texts, or voicemails feel outdated.

The fact you have to call a special number to hear the messages you've been left is such a pain, not to mention having to go through an entire interaction with a switchboard-based robot voice.

Luckily, there's a hidden feature on iPhones that allows you to automatically turn your voicemails into written texts—and best of all, you don't have to ever call the robot again.

'Visual voicemail' uses super-smart artificial intelligence to listen to your voicemails and then write out what they've said in text.

While it's widely available in the US and Canada, visual voicemail isn't universally supported in the UK. Only certain mobile networks offer it, including:

  • O2
  • Vodafone
  • Voxi
  • Sky
  • Which Nintendo Switch should I buy in the Black Friday sale – OLED, Lite or Standard?

You may need to perform an additional setup via your mobile network.

You have to activate the service using the MyO2 app if you're with O2.

Or, if you're with Vodafone, you need to disconnect from WiFi and text STATE to 100121. It's automatically set up on Sky.

Sadly, if you're on giffgaff, Three, Tesco Mobile, Virgin, Lebara, or ASDA, you're out of luck and will just have to wait until they support it.

The feature has been supported on all Apple iPhones since way back in 2007, and it's perhaps because it's so old that the company no longer advertises it.
