A new petition from Samsung Galaxy fans has called for the South Korean company to stop using a mix of its own Exynos-branded chipsets and the equivalent Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon in its flagship Galaxy S smartphone series. The online petition, which surfaced on Change.org, has already racked up an impressive 19,000 signatures – so clearly, this is something plenty of people care about.
The petition claims that handsets with the Samsung Exynos chipset perform worse than their Qualcomm Snapdragon counterparts. Not only that, but Exynos chips are more likely to overheat and drain battery, the petition states.
The Change.org petition was created five days ago and targets 25,000 signatures. In the description of the petition, it states: “Phones with Exynos SoC chips are shown to perform slower, have less battery life, use inferior camera sensors and processing, overheat and throttle faster, amongst other issues. At the very least, we would appreciate if Samsung were transparent about their inconsistencies. Alternatively, for Samsung to ensure we weren’t paying the exact same price or even higher than our US friends.”
Not only that, the petition also highlights the fact Samsung smartphones powered by Exynos chips use its own ISOCELL sensors, whereas those that leverage the Qualcomm Snapdragon use Sony camera sensors. Qualcomm chipsets are the choice used by the vast majority of flagship Android handsets, including the likes of the OnePlus 7T Pro and Google Pixel 4.
Sony smartphone camera sensors are another industry standard and are used by a wide range of manufacturers, including Apple.
There have been numerous reports – as there are each year following the launch of a new Samsung flagship – that show performance differences between the Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered version of the Galaxy S20 available in the United States and the Exynos-fuelled variant sold in the UK, Europe and Asian markets. YouTube creator MrWhoseTheBoss compared the Exynos and Qualcomm-powered flagships from this year and found vast differences in the handsets.

Some comparisons show Galaxy S20s using the Exynos 990 chipset have slower CPU and GPU performance, higher clock speed throttling, worse heat management – leading to a handset that’s hotter to hold in your palm, and with worse battery life.
However, it’s difficult to work out whether these results are due to the software optimisations found on each smartphone to take advantage of the hardware. Apple has achieved huge success by designing its own custom silicon designed specifically to work with its iOS and iPadOS mobile operating systems – something Samsung seems very keen to replicate with its own Exynos division.
If the thousands of people signing the petition are anything to go by, it seems people would rather Samsung simply sticks with an off-the-shelf processor from Qualcomm.
