This Tiny Cabin Kit on Amazon Lets You Build a Personal 'Resort'

Until now, the phrase “build your own resort” may have sounded nonsensical. “Resort” summons up images of white sand beaches stretching out into cerulean seas, and maybe a mini-umbrella drink appearing unbidden at your elbow. It’s all about relaxation, not DIY—a resort is where you go to do nothing yourself.

Tiny house maker Allwood would like to politely disagree. The company is currently pitching its Allwood Bonaire as a “mini resort” that can be put together right in your backyard or patio. At 225 square feet, “mini” is definitely the operative word here, but you can see how the Nordic-wood cabin does evoke Mediterranean seaside living.

It’s open and airy, with plenty of windows and doors leading to a single interior room, like a studio apartment. How you configure that space is up to you, though running plumbing and creating a galley-esque kitchen along the wall is one option. The package includes no furniture, paint, or lighting, leaving the buyer to choose the final look.

The Bonaire currently sells on Amazon for $13,995, with free shipping available anywhere in the contiguous 48 states. It’s also probably worth noting that it ships as a “cabin kit,” which is where the DIY part comes it. You’ll be putting it together yourself, a process the company says requires “minimal tools,” though it’ll still take two adults a couple of days to assemble.

If you’re more than window shopping, it’s worth considering some of the potential hidden costs of a tiny home, including a foundation and insulation if you don’t actually live on a beach. (There’s a difference between a cabin and a tiny home, after all.) Otherwise, though, isn’t it fun to imagine your own home-built resort?
