Becoming a homeowner is hard and expensive, if the home you’re looking for is one with foundations. But when Nicholas and Francesca decided to realize their dream of traveling the country together, they found a tiny home with wheels and haven’t looked back. In a recent episode of YouTube series Living Big in a Tiny House, they explain how downsizing helped them finally create their shared dream home from scratch.
After doing their research, they purchased a school bus which they then gutted and transformed into a surprisingly spacious house (just over 200 square feet), with detailed stonework and cohesive decor. Fortunately, the school bus was an old model that was already fitted with exterior storage, which freed up interior space, and saved them money on having bins installed.
The entire house is 38 feet long and 7 and a half feet wide, with a 20 inch raise on the roof, so there’s no need to duck your head when you enter. The driver’s station is still intact, but when they’re parked up they cover it up and turn the dashboard into a couch.

There’s also a 10 foot couch in the living room which unfolds into a massive guest bed, and a kitchen with plenty of counter space as Francesca and Nicholas love to cook together. There is sprayfoam insulation throughout the bus, and a working fireplace which easily heats the entire unit during cold Colorado winters. The living room leads through to a shower room and toilet, and then the master bedroom.
The bus is equipped with solar panels, an 80 gallon water tank and a wood-burning stove, so they can live entirely off the grid. Nicholas jokes that the only time they ever really need to “come back to civilization” is to replenish their stores of food and water — and the rest of the time, they can just focus on their adventures.
