An academic has finally proved that cannabis gives people the munchies after discovering that legalising weed prompts a huge increase in junk food sales.
The University of Connecticut said ‘there may be something more substantial to the urban myth’ which states that marijuana makes stoners ‘go on an epic junk-food binge, consuming mass quantities of chips, cookies, and whatever other high-calorie, salt-or-sugar-laden snacks they can get’.
Michele Baggio, assistant professor of economics, conducted a study which has found a link between the legalisation of weed and ‘increased consumption of certain high-calorie foods’.
She looked at data on monthly purchases of cookies, chips, and ice cream from shops in more than 2,000 counties in the United States over a 10-year period.

Her analysis showed that the legalisation of recreational marijuana in states like Colorado, Oregon, and Washington led to a 3.1% increase in ice cream purchases, a 4.1% increase in cookie purchases, and a 5.3% increase in crisp purchases soon after weed was made legally available to buy.
‘These might seem like small numbers,’ said Baggio.
‘But they’re statistically significant and economically significant as well.
‘I’m not an advocate for legalization or not.
‘I’m just interested in whether there are unintended consequences to the policy.’
