Thousands of Tesla drivers will be asked to take their cars in for servicing as part of a major US-wide recall.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3470 Tesla Model Y cars from the 2022-2023 range could have a major safety issue.

Apparently the metal bolts used to secure the frames of the car's second-row seats might not have been tightened properly.

A letter from the NHTSA to Tesla claimed this could reduce the ability of the car's seatbelts to keep passengers safe in a crash and increase the risk of injury in a collision.

Tesla's service centers will reportedly inspect the affected vehicles and tighten the bolts for free.

The company will also notify customers if their vehicle is due a recall on April 25, 2023.

It follows another major recall of Tesla vehicles announced in mid-February. Elon Musk's company agreed to 'recall' the 'Full Self-Driving' software in more than 362,000 vehicles after the NHTSA said it has flaws which make it 'unsafe'.

However, unlike the bolt recall announced for the Model Y, affected Tesla drivers won't have to return their vehicle to a service centre.

Instead, they are just being issued with an over-the-air downloadable update to patch the software.

In a letter, the NHTSA said the Full Self Driving software has bugs that "may allow the vehicle to act unsafe around intersections, such as travelling straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane, entering a stop sign-controlled intersection without coming to a complete stop, or proceeding into an intersection during a steady yellow traffic signal without due caution."

Tesla said it wasn't aware of any injuries or deaths related to the FSD software but agreed to conduct the 'recall' "out of an abundance of caution".
