Sky TV just got one massive advantage over Virgin Media – here’s why

If you subscribe to Sky TV then you’ll find yourself with a big advantage over Virgin Media this morning. Those with Sky Q beamed to their living rooms can now access the all-new Disney+ service right from the home screen – something Virgin users can currently only dream of.

This content partnership was announced earlier this month but, with Disney+ launching in the UK from today, this update is now officially live.

The Disney+ streaming service brings exclusive access to TV shows and blockbuster movies from the likes of Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney and National Geographic.

Those who subscribe can watch a range of new and classic content and there’s plenty of entertainment which is only available via this streaming platform including Star Wars: The Mandalorian and The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

Sky says that customers will be able to find the Disney+ app in the Apps section on their Sky Q box, alongside other favourites like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube

The service is priced at £5.99 per month or £59.99 for the year, making it the same price at Netflix’s Basic plan.

Sky Q customers will also be able to buy the Disney+ App through Sky by the end of April 2020, priced at £5.99 a month, giving them Sky TV and Disney movie and series recommendations side-by-side.

Speaking about the news Jeremy Darroch, Group Chief Executive, Sky, said: “We’ve built a strong partnership with Disney over three decades and we’re pleased that our customers in the UK and Ireland can continue to enjoy their world-class content – all in one place on Sky Q. This is a great start to what is set to be another stellar year for Sky – in 2020 we’ll launch new channels and genres, start building Sky Studios Elstree and we’ve got brilliant new and returning originals coming too.”

And Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, added: “We are delighted that Sky is selling the Disney+ service on their platform and, along with our other distribution partners, will deliver exceptional reach at launch.”

News of this latest Disney+ release comes as the service has announced some extraordinary new measures to lower the pressure it could exert on broadband bandwidth across the country.

The unprecedented steps follow similar measures introduced by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV+, which have all pledged to drop streaming quality in a bid to alleviate some of the strain on the broadband infrastructure as millions work from home and self isolate to try and stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“Disney will lower our overall bandwidth utilisation by at least 25 percent in all of the markets launching Disney Plus on March 24th,” Kevin Mayer, Disney direct-to-consumer division head, confirmed in a statement about the streaming cuts.
