Sky Q will bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) to its live sports coverage for the first time this summer. HDR will be combined with Ultra HD (4K) broadcasts to create the best possible viewing experience for Sky TV customers.
Sky first introduced High Dynamic Range (HDR) to its Q set-top box at the end of last year, starting with Sky Cinema. Since then, Sky has slowly added to the list of titles available on Sky Cinema. From today, Sky is giving live sports coverage the HDR treatment for the first time.
More than 200 hours of live action from Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be available in HDR and Ultra HD via Sky Q’s dedicated Eurosport 4K channel. There are also seven Olympic specific Eurosport pop-up channels in HD, at no extra cost. And of course, Sky Q will have broadcasts from BBC and the discovery+ streaming app too. For those who don’t know, HDR brings more detail to the colours on-screen. You’ll need an HDR-compatible telly to take advantage of the feature, but if those who already have one in their home should seen darker darks and brighter brights. Not only that, but colours should be more vibrant to create a true-to-life picture.
Although HDR has long been a feature of video on-demand services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV+, it has taken traditional broadcasters a little longer to adopt the format.
