With over one billion daily users, Instagram is without a doubt one of the most popular apps around.
If you use Instagram , you’ve probably got the basics of the app down, but knowing exactly which photos will reel in the like can still be tricky business.
Now, a new study has revealed a simple trick to boost the number of likes on your selfies .
Researchers from Rowan University in New Jersey have revealed that ditching filters on your selfies can boost the number of likes they get.
Meanwhile, posting photos of your job, hobbies or economic status can also help to reel in the likes, according to the researchers.
In the study, the researchers analysed 1,873 selfies, including the number of likes they received, and whether or not they included a filter.
The results revealed that selfies with filters received fewer likes than those without.
Dr Seoyeon Hong, who led the study, explained: “The number of likes was lower for selfies posted with filters, such as stickers or excessive use of colour filters compared to selfies without such filters.
“Studies in self-presentations suggest excessive excessive intent toward others to only think positively of an individual's self-image may trigger reluctance to engage.”
The results also showed that photos including social cues (such as the user’s job, hobby or relationship), received the most likes.
Dr Hong added: “When selfies included social cues of the selfie-taker, it had more likes in comparison to selfies without any social cues of the individuals.
“The results indicate selfies providing additional information about the individuals in the form of social cues, such as professional identity or status of wealth, may be perceived as further intention to engage with other social media users.”
