PS5 price: How much was the PS4 when it first came out? What you can expect from PS5

PS5 price points will remain the chief concern for most people hoping to get their hands on Sony’s next-generation offering later this year. The souped-up console was revealed in a conference yesterday, which showcased impressive new visuals and a vast collection of upcoming games. However, Sony has remained tight-lipped about how much its customers will need to fork out to play them.

How much was the PS4 when it first came out?

The PS4 came out in summer 2013, six years following the PS3’s March 2007 release.

Gamers baulked at the prices of both consoles, but the PS4 ended up being the cheaper of the two at £350.

Now, the price has dropped considerably lower, with a 500GB standard model packaged with three games selling for £254.99 on Amazon.

The one terabyte version, which is overall closer to the PS5 specs due to its 4K HDR and massive storage doesn’t match up to the original price either.

The advanced models currently sell for £315 each, and experts suggest its successor could cost at least £100 more.

Current predictions point towards a price of £449, with an announcement of said price likely to come in July with the first preorders.

However, Sony has opted to launch two versions of the same console, one disc-based an another fully digital.

The digital version will likely come cheaper than its slightly bulkier sibling, which includes the traditional disc tray.

The PS5 would likely come in bundles with some of the most anticipated games from yesterday’s announcement.

Sony hasn’t yet revealed how much its games will cost either, but logic dictates they will exceed current prices.

PS4 games sell for an average of £50, so new discs and online purchases could retail for £55 to £60.

Sony’s decision not to release prices may have come out of prospective competition with Microsoft.

The rivals have also unveiled their equally ambitious Xbox Series X, which will release around roughly the same time as the PS5.

Developers likely fear releasing their price first would lead the other to undercut them.

However, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO Jim Ryan recently conceded their console may not have the “lowest price” in the console battle.

Rumours on Twitter suggest the two terabyte model could cost up to £600, with one user saying someone saw it listed in the UK for £599.99.

The Amazon listing came without link, but they said the person had allegedly been able to pre-order.

The tweet read: “PlayStation 5 2TB placeholder listing on Amazon UK says it’s £599.99.

“No link posted to Amazon but someone was able to order it apparently.”
