Porn-loving federal worker infected government network with malware

A government employee’s penchant for watching porn on his work computer infected the entire network with malware and left it vulnerable to information-stealing viruses, an investigation has found.

The unidentified horny staffer had an “extensive history” of watching porn and visited more than 9,000 X-rated web pages on his government-issued laptop, according to a report by the US Department of Interior’s Office of Inspector General.

He is stationed at the US Geological Survey’s Earth Resources Observation and Science Center satellite imaging facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

OIG launched an investigation after “suspicious internet traffic” was discovered during an IT security audit, the Oct. 17 report said.

The smutty sites the civil servant frequented “originated in Russia and contained malware.”

“Our analysis confirmed that many of the pornographic images were subsequently saved to an unauthorized USB device and personal Android cell phone connected to [redacted] Government-issued computer,” the report said.

The Android was also infected with malware.

The probe found that USGS’s website access and open USB ports were particularly vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks.

OIG recommended that USGS beef up its network security and “regularly monitor employee web usage history.” The report didn’t detail whether the worker was penalized for his porn habit.
