Porn law delayed as UK age verification system pushed back to ‘end of the year’

Earlier this month, the UK government announced that a new system was coming into place to prevent children from accessing porn .

The system will force users to prove their age before accessing sites like PornHub and YouPorn.

While the new system was initially expected to roll out in April, the government has delayed its launch until the ‘end of the year.’

This change, which is being developed alongside the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC),  was sneakily announced in a blog about upcoming 5G projects.

The blog said: “Our priority is to make the internet safer for children and we believe this is best achieved by taking time to get the implementation of the policy right.

“We will therefore allow time for the BBFC as regulator to undertake a public consultation on its draft guidance which will be launched later this month.

“For the public and the industry to prepare for and comply with age verification, the Government will also ensure a period of up to three months after the BBFC guidance has been cleared by Parliament before the law comes into force.

“It is anticipated age verification will be enforceable by the end of the year.”

Once the change has been rolled out, anyone attempting to access porn sites from UK devices will be re-directed to a non-pornographic ‘landing-page.’

There, they’ll be prompted to enter an email address and password, and verify their age using a passport, driving license or credit card.
