Owners of the very latest Sony smartphones, such as the Xperia 1 II, could soon get some vital Android news. According to a new report from Japanese website androidnext.info, Sony is poised to announce that it’s planning to keep its new phones updated with the latest Android releases for up to three years.
That means owners should be able to put their minds at ease knowing their expensive phones aren’t suddenly going to miss out on all the latest upgrades from Android. If true, it could mean Sony is about to follow Samsung’s lead with the South Korean firm recently confirming that its new devices will be kept up-to-date for three years, rather than the two updates offered until now.
It’s unclear where the report on Xperia originated, but the site states the new Xperia 1 II and rumoured Xperia 5 II will get updates all the way up to Android 13. Given that Android 11 isn’t available to download quite yet, that shows just how much longer your smartphone will be rocking the latest and greatest features.
Sadly it’s not all good news as the site also suggests that a number of more recent Xperia smartphones won’t be so lucky.
According to the report, smartphones including Xperia 1, Xperia 5 and Xperia 10 II will only be upgraded to Android 11 and nothing more. That’s not so bad but things get even worse for Sony Xperia 10, Xperia 10 Plus, Xperia Ace, Xperia 8, Xperia 8 Lite, Xperia XZ3 owners with it being suggested that these devices are now firmly stuck with Android 10.
We’ll have to wait and see if Sony confirms this rumour in the future but there could be a busy few weeks ahead for the Japanese tech firm.
As we mentioned earlier, it’s thought that the new Xperia 5 II could launch soon and bring some pretty impressive specs at a price that is way more affordable than the Xperia 1 II. The current Xperia 5 costs around £699 which is almost half the price of the new Xperia 1 II.
If Sony keeps its new phone at the same price but adds rumoured features such as a fast 120Hz screen it could be a device for Sony Xperia fans to watch out for. According to recently leaked specs, the Xperia 5 II will have a 6.1-inch Full HD+ HDR OLED that comes in a tall 21:9 aspect ratio.
It will feature 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage which can be expanded via a MicroSD slot and be powered by a Snapdragon 865 chip – which enables 5G on the device.
The Xperia 5 II should give owners plenty of use on a single charge thanks to its 4,000mAh battery, while it will also offer fast charging if you’re in a rush.
And, unlike last year’s model, the Xperia 5 II will see the trusty 3.5mm headphone jack make a return. Expect more news soon.
