O2 network calls not working in UK as Brits stay home to work

UPDATE 2 – O2 has updated their service status page with a bit more information, confirming that the network is experiencing issues with voice calls.

As noted previously though, this appears to be an issue with multiple providers (EE, Vodafone etc), so at least everyone is impacted and we're all in the same boat.

Here's the official message from O2:

"Some customers may be experiencing issues when making and receiving voice calls on our 2G, 3G and 4G networks. Our mobile data and messaging services and O2 Wifi are not affected. This is a cross industry issue and our technical teams continue to investigate, working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience."

More to follow.

UPDATE 2 – As if things couldn't get any worse, it looks like EE, Vodafone, GiffGaff and many more networks are also down.

Original Story – The O2 Network is down this morning with thousands of reports that voice calls across the country are not working.

On the Independent website monitor, DownDetector, there's a massive surge in reports of 'Mobile phone' issues with the O2 network.

For those who do not know, DownDetector is an independent website that tracks social mentions around certain topics to detect outages across the globe.

A message from O2's Network status page has also confirmed problems, telling customers:

"We are aware that some customers may be experiencing issues with our voice service. Our technical teams are investigating. We apologise for any inconvenience. Updates will be shared here as soon they are available."

The outage comes at a time when most brits are opting to stay at home to work, making it obviously terrible timing.

Given that O2 also runs the network for Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff and many other third party companies, it's possible that other networks may also be impacted.

Online there's also a large pool of people complaining about the service, clearly upset at not being able to make calls.

"#o2 @O2 your online chat tells me that you have nothing wrong with your network. So when I turn to twitter you clearly have a problem. I like most are exacting important calls at the moment. Hopefully this won't be a feature of #coronavirus" one customer wrote

Another wrote "@O2 worst day to have your voice network go down… FFS"

Whilst a third added: "@O2 come on man!!! I’m working from home and this is time you choose to have network issues ?"

Stay tuned for updates.
