Netflix is testing a ‘Top 10’ feature in the UK to help you find popular shows

If you’re a British Netflix viewer, you may see a new feature appearing on your platform over the next few months.

Netflix has announced that it’s testing a new ‘Top 10’ list in the UK, featuring the most popular content over the previous week.

In a letter to investors, Netflix said it would release ‘weekly top 10 lists of the most popular content on our UK service.’

According to the BBC , the new feature will not reveal viewing numbers for those shows.

Instead, users will only be able to infer the relative popularity of the programmes to one another.

While Netflix claims that the new list is designed to help viewers ‘participate in public conversation’ about popular programmes, not everyone is so convinced.

Speaking to the BBC, Tom Harrington of Enders Analysis, said: “The point of the release of this data isn't for granular understanding as to what people are actually watching on the service, it is for promotional purposes.

"Given its escalating spend on original content, Netflix is always keen to push the narrative that originals are what drive the service.

"The list will disguise what is actually watched on the service, which is predominantly acquired content.

“It will likely be dominated by newly-released originals, the demand for which often quickly declines soon after release.”

The Top 10 feature will be rolled out across the UK over the next two months, before Netflix decides whether or not to launch it worldwide.
